In the past Piuro was the most important village of the bottom part of Val Bregaglia. Since 1400 it was rich and industrious due to the extraction and processing of ollare stone as well as the commerce of silk with Europe. The village was destroyed in 1618 by a huge landslide.
The principle attractions are the Renaissance masterpiece Palazzo Vertemate Franchi, the Museo degli Scavi di Piuro (Excavations Museum) and the Cascate dell'Acquafraggia (waterfalls).

The Romanesque churches and the co-operative presses of Val Bregaglia
Within the district of Santa Croce, there are two important examples of Romanesques churches. The church of San Martino in Aurogo dates back to the eleventh century and is characterized by valuable ancient frescos. The Rotonda, so called for its circular design, is situated on the opposite side of the Mera river and contains an extremely valuable wooden altarpiece cupboard.
Regarding the presence of terraced vineyards, one must remember that in Val Bregaglia it's possible to visit some grape presses; at Villa di Chiavenna (Ponteggia district), at Santa Croce and at Chiavenna.
